2006 Updates
16 December 2006
- Colorado Freeway Exits: Added a listing for the new Broomfield Event Center to the US 36 Wadsworth exit.
26 November 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- New photos: Uploaded some photos I took during the E-470 Flyby opening ceremony in August.
- Scrubbed the site of all links to the T-REX project website,
since I assume it's only a matter of time now until that site is taken
down.
- Updated the Contracted Maintenance page, since I discovered CDOT published new maintenance maps a couple months ago.
25 November 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- After a discussion with Paul Haynes I've created a new page that focuses on the Denver-Boulder Turnpike and moved info off of the US 36 page to it. Of note is the new diagram of how the ramps and tollbooths worked at the Broomfield interchange.
- In the Trivia section, I had to change the number in the municipal rankings
from 271 to 270 due to Watkins voters' bizzare decision to
disincorporate only two year after incorporating. Prompted by that I
also added a list of municipal incorporation changes since 1990 (most
of the info comes from a Census summary).
24 November 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Added a table of segment opening dates to the history section of the I-25 page.
- Updated the US 40 and TRANs info with the completion of the wideing project on the east side of Berthoud Pass.
- After an e-mail converstation with CDOT, I've changed how I depict SH 110.
Even though there's still a short section of it listed in the route
log, CDOT no longer considers SH 110 a part of the real state highway
system, so I noted that accordingly.
- Colorado Freeway Exits:
- Upgraded the bus/light rail graphics for RTD park-n-rides that
appear in the metro Denver exit guides. The graphics now are more in
line with MUTCD symbols.
22 November 2006
- Colorado Freeway Exits:
- Added listings at the necessary exits on I-25 and I-225 for the new light rail stations that have opened as part of T-REX.
- Note from Steve Riner: The SH 16 exit in Fountain is now called Mesa Ridge Parkway. Updated the I-25 list.
4 November 2006
- Colorado Freeway Exits:
- Oops: I-25 northbound exit to I-70 is 214A, not 214.
- Permanent speed limit signing put up as part of T-REX no longer includes the 40mph minimum speed limit, so updated the I-25 list. I guess now only half of I-25 in Denver has the minimum (Broadway to 58th).
- Another oops: Ramp closures I had shown on I-25 in Coloado Springs as part of COSMIX ended months ago.
23 September 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Update to SH 325 info thanks to clarifications from Dale Sanderson.
- Update to Montezuma County info on the County Numbering page, thanks to info from Nathan Barton.
- New photo of a Pueblo street name sign in the General photo gallery, thanks to Jay Bernard.
- Upper Midwest Freeway Exits: Updated all lists to show horseshoe/loop ramps.
11 September 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Minor updates to guide info for US 40 and US 385.
- Given the recent renaming of the Front Range Toll Road to Prairie Falcon Parkway Express, updated the Other Roads page with the latest info on the proposal.
- Updated the Ramp Meters page thanks to an update from Ben Kiene.
- Upper Midwest Freeway Exits:
- Update to the central I-94 list, thanks to an update from Adam Froehlig which included the opening of the new interchange at Monticello.
4 September 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Clarified the topography US 36 goes through in the description of its Estes Park to Lyons routing.
- Corrected two "oopses" on the SH 96
listing. I had left out one of the counties it passes through (Otero)
and forgot to mention that it is also an NHS route where it's
concurrent with US 287.
- Because of my Labor Day weekend roadtrip I'm able to add Kiowa County to the list of counties I've visited on the Where I've Been page.
- Added Firstview to the list of "non-towns" on the Municipal Trivia page.
- The 144th Ave exit in Adams County has opened, so updated the I-25 exit list.
31 August 2006
- Colorado Freeway Exits: Two speed limit changes on I-25:
In Arapahoe County the 65 zone has been lengthened north to Belleview
Avenue. And in north Douglas County, the left lane 55 minimum has been
done away with.
27 August 2006
- Colorado Freeway Exits: Added nifty warning signs to many of the exit lists to show sharp horseshoe/loop ramps.
26 August 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Update to I-25 and I-225 listings and the TRANS page with the completion of T-REX.
- Update to US 287 and SH 56 listings with the completion of the Berthoud bypass.
- Update to the E-470 page with the completion of the "flyby" at the I-70 interchange.
- Recently clinched SH 66 by driving the Estes Park section of it, so upated the Where I've Been page.
- Added "Aux Lane" to the list of terms on the About page.
24 August 2006
- Colorado Freeway Exits: The E-470 "Flyby" at the I-70 interchange has been completed, bypassing the signals, so updated the exit list.
21 August 2006
- Colorado Freeway Exits: T-REX is done tomorrow! Removed all ramp closures and references to it on the I-25 exit lists.
- Upper Midwest Freeway Exits: The final segment of the US 53 Eau Claire bypass freeway opened today. Was able to update the US 53 exit list with all the exits on it thanks to a slug of info sent to me by Derek Hagen.
13 August 2006
- Colorado Highways: Comprehensive update to the following sections of the Quickfacts page: DUI laws, registration and license plates, driver's licenses.
26 July 2006
- Colorado Highways: Chris Geelhart has moved his Nebraska Highways site to a new server so updated all the Nebraska route cross-linking as necessary.
22 July 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- The US 287 Berthoud bypass has opened, so updated the TRANs page since it was one of CDOT's 28 high priority projects. (The US 287 main info listing will be updated later.)
- Added the two rail line abbreviations I use on the site (BNSF and UPRR) to the list of terms on the About page.
- Colorado Freeway Exits:
- The T-REX project is winding up. The southbound I-25
ramp to Evans Ave has reopened and south of Arapahoe Rd it has its
pre-project 65 MPH speed limit back, so updated the exit list.
9 July 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- New info from what I observed on my Yuma/Kit Carson County Memorial Day roadtrip. Updated guide info for US 24, US 36, and US 385. Noted that SH 57 is unmarked out in the field, no signs for it anywhere. Noted that SH 59's overlap with US 36 is unmarked, making it a broken route.
- Added info and a marker picture for Kit Carson and Yuma Counties on the County Numbering page.
- After being reminded of it by Dale Sanderson, added Dowd to the list of "non-towns" on the CDOT map in the Trivia section.
- New pictures: US 24 (Vona), US 34 (Wray), US 36 (east of Byers), US 385 and I-70 (Aurora and Deer Trail). Also added signal pictures for Burlington, including a historical signal.
4 July 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Wholesale update to most of the Trivia section.
Updated everything related to population ranks with the release by the
Census of their 2005 estimates. Split county- and municipal-related
items onto two different pages. Added county ranks by population
density and area. Added a section on the municipal page discussing
Colorado's five forms of municipalities. Added a section listing known
"non-towns" on the CDOT state map. On the elevation page realized I had
erroneously left Ovid out of the list of the lowest municipalities in
the state.
- Colorado Freeway Exits;
- A couple updates in Colorado Springs on I-25 with COSMIX ramp closures/openings.
- CDOT's put up a couple new supplemental signs on I-25 north of Denver: Carter Lake at SH 56 and Horsetooth Reservoir at Harmony Rd.
4 June 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Major update to the I-25 page due to two issues: The HOV to HOT lane conversion and T-REX approaching its end.
- Colorado Freeway Exits:
- Update to I-25 and US 36 exit lists due to the HOV to HOT lane conversion.
29 May 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Took a roadtrip through Yuma and Kit Carson counties this weekend so updated the Where I've Been page.
- Major update to the Front Range Toll Road article
on the Other Roads page. The update was forced by laws passed this
legislative session which placed new restrictions on the ability to
build private toll roads.
- Realized that my descriptions in the Peña Blvd article of the DIA parking fees was wildly out of date so updated it.
25 May 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Added notes resulting from the state legislature creating two new memorial designations this session: SH 47 is the César Chávez Memorial Parkway, I-70 from Brighton Blvd to Tower Rd is the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Highway.
- Added a note to the US 287 listing about CDOT plans to build a freeway bypass of Lamar.
7 May 2006
- Got rid of my Change Colorado Counties page since I realized it's
been five years since I've done anything with it. Instead I inserted a
map of Colorado's counties on the City/County Trivia Items page.
- Added a copyright disclaimer to the About page of Colorado Highways.
30 April 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- SH 7 signage has finally be removed from Broadway and Canyon
Blvd in Boulder following the turnback of Broadway to the city. Updated
the all the necessary info in the SH 7 listing, as well as some info in the US 36, SH 93 and SH 119 listings, since it affected those too.
- Added a photo of SH 14's east end, from Dale Sanderson.
- Updated info about BL 76 following an e-mail from Dale Sanderson.
- Added a picture of a Park County marker to the County Numbering page.
- Updated Where I've Been page since I clinched SH 170.
- Colorado Freeway Exits;
- CDOT has added Firestone to the SH 119 exit on I-25 and removed it from the SH 52 exit. Changed the I-25 list accordingly.
- Upper Midwest Freeway Exits:
- Adam Froehlig alerted me to an upcoming interchange change in Monticello on I-94.
- Adam Froehlig corrected me on where I'm showing the end of the US 52 freeway north of Rochester, it's actually further north than I had it shown.
- Five months after the fact, I've finally switched the
designation of Eau Claire's North Crossing from WI 124 to WI 312.
Affected the I-94 and US 53 lists.
- Added a link to John Weeks' excellent Bridges of the Upper Mississippi site on the title page.
3 April 2006
- Colorado Highways and Freeway Exits: Updated the info and history for SH 470 with the opening of the EB I-70 to WB 470 loop ramp at that interchange this weekend. Updated the necessary info on the I-70 and SH 470 exit lists.
24 March 2006
- Colorado Highways: Received four roundabout photos from Phil Demosthenes: US 6 Eagle, SH 7 Brighton, and I-70 Avon.
18 March 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Clarified/expanded on the info in US 85's history section about its routing through Pueblo.
- Added to US 450's history that at one time it was routed through La Veta, as pointed out by Dale Sanderson.
- Colorado Freeway Exits:
- Updated info on I-25 in Castle Rock due to SH 86's reroute onto Founders Pkwy.
11 March 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Added a new temporary page: Celebrate the Interstate.
June 29, 2006 will be the 50th anniversary of the Interstate system and
to mark the occasion I've put up a page with some facts and figures on
the Interstates in Colorado.
- Added "HOV Lane" and "Ramp Meter" to the list of definitions on the About page.
- Colorado Freeway Exits:
- Oops: I had been previously overlooking an offramp that's on SH 47 to the frontage road just east of I-25. I've added it to the exit list.
2 March 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Robert Halonen reported to me that the signing out in the field has now been updated to reflect SH 86's long-awaited reroute onto Founders Parkway around the northeast side of Castle Rock.

16 February 2006
- Colorado Highways: Added historical info to the US 40S listing regarding DeBeque Canyon, following an e-mail from Paul Bardell.
11 February 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- After an e-mail conversation with Dale Sanderson and Steve
Riner, updated the histories for a couple highways in Pueblo. Added
three whole paragraphs of history of US 50 in Pueblo and Pueblo West, also tweaked historical info for old SH 76 and Spur 78.
- Colorado Freeway Exits:
- Cleaned up a couple things on I-25 north of Pueblo with info from Steve Riner.
21 January 2006
- Colorado Highways:
- Three new I-25 photos from David Herrera: Exit 94, Exit 173 and 8th Ave in Denver.
- Updated the list of other county road sites around the country on the County Numbering page.
16 January 2006
- Colorado and Upper Midwest Freeway Exit lists: My exit lists
are now MUTCD 2003 compliant! What that involved was taking out all the
Reduced Speed Ahead signs I had shown and replacing them with the new
Speed Reduction warning sign. With the 2003 MUTCD the FHWA has
permanently done away with the Reduced Speed Ahead signs and you'll
probably see them gradually disappear through attrition over the next
10 years. The 2003 MUTCD also changed the HC (hazardous cargo) sign to
HM (hazardous material), although the only place I showed one of those
was on I-70 at the Eisenhower Tunnel.
